Steering Committee roles

  • Preside over Local Chapter and Steering Committee meetings (or appoint a substitute).
  • Be the official public spokespersons for the Local Chapter.
  • Facilitate such actions and policies as the Local Chapter's general welfare may demand.
  • Coordinate the day-to-day operations and political work of the Local Chapter's Branches and Committees.
  • Report to Local Chapter Regular Meetings on the business of the Steering Committee Meetings.
  • Make sure SC meeting minutes of those meetings are available for inspection.
  • The Co-Chairs must not both identify as cisgender men.
  • Prepare agenda draft for Steering Committee meetings.
  • Prepare agenda draft for Regular meetings.
  • Answer correspondence sent to the Chapter as needed.
  • Lead communication with Regional Field Organizer and regional DSA / YDSA chapters.
  • Make sure that members and recruits know how to engage with the Chapter. That is, make sure someone is sending out this type of information:Monthly meeting and event announcement via Google Group.
  • Steering Committee meeting announcement via Google Group.
  • Regular meeting announcement via Google Group, Facebook, and Twitter.
  • Post other meeting and event announcements as needed via Google Group, Facebook, and Twitter.
  • Update Google Calendar with meetings and events as needed.
  • Answer all correspondence and queries of the Local Chapter.
  • Monitor the chapter email and make sure that most correspondence and queries are addressed by someone in the Steering Committee, usually a Co-chair. Help archive old email.
  • Maintain and, to a reasonable extent, protect the privacy of an up-to-date membership list of the Local Chapter
  • Update the Airtable database with weekly lists from National (we have an automatic script for this now!)
  • Distribute copies of minutes and agendas to each Steering Committee member in a format agreed upon by the Steering Committee
  • Take minutes at Chapter and Steering Committee Meetings and send to Google Group.
  • Assure that corporate records are maintained for legal status.
  • Ensure effective communication with National DSA, including the filing of any amendment to these bylaws.
  • Temporarily assume the responsibilities of the Co-Chair if neither Co-Chair is able to do so.
  • Take minutes of all Local Chapter and Steering Committee Meetings
  • Collect and maintain Committee charters, notes, and meeting minutes, and make copies available to members promptly.

  • Have custody of these documents, and of the resolutions, reports and other official records of the Local Chapter, and shall transfer official records in good condition to their successor.

  • Official records shall include the documents necessary for continued functioning of the Local Chapter, such as member lists, and all documentation necessary to provide, to the general membership, transparent accountability of Local Chapter actions and decisions to the greatest reasonable extent.
  • Responsible for the funds and financial records of the Local Chapter.
  • All funds collected by the Local Chapter will be turned over to the Treasurer, who shall deposit them in a bank account under the name of the Local Chapter.
  • Ensure that membership dues are paid up-to-date. (Communicate with members about dues payments, including securing waivers as needed, and reminding members to renew before chapter meetings to retain voting status.)
  • Chair a Finance Committee if one is established.
  • Prepare the annual Local Chapter budget and deliver the Local Chapter financial report to the General Meeting of the Local Chapter.
  • Periodic progress reports as requested by the Steering Committee of the Local Chapter.
  • Provide basic information to National DSA related to the operations and finances of the Local Chapter.
