Maybe Don’t Ask Me to Speak

Maybe don't ask me to speak to the issues of feminism
Me, who's been told to shut up and sit down for so long, and so often, in so many ways
It has become nearly terrifying
To think of what I might say

I might tell you of my perpetually breaking heart
As they rape and pillage, strangle and smother
My most dearly beloved, my true mother

I might tell you of the crushing, bewildering weight of compassion
That wreaks havoc at my core -- for you, and for me,
And all there is that's beautiful

I might tell you of the longing so deep down inside
For justice, just for once, just for all
That we might end our constant mourning of the dead and dying

I might even tell you of the hope that sparks at times
When I hear you speak of yours, or I see it in your eyes
That this time, just maybe, we can speak up and be heard

Maybe don't ask me to speak to the issues of my humanity
Me, who’s been silenced and shamed for so long and so often in so many ways
I could become alive and empowered
To think of what I might say
