Community Conversations Working Group

The United States is among the richest countries in all of history. However, unless you are a member of the corporate or political elite who are wealthy beyond imagination, you would never know it. In the real world of working people, our infrastructure is collapsing, our schools are laying off teachers and cutting back on instructional services, our drinking water is barely potable, and public and private pensions have become a thing of the past. Consumers, students, and homeowners are loaded with crushing debt and real wages have not risen since the 1970s.
How is it that we are so rich and yet have such poor services, so much debt and declining wages?
Runaway income inequality is the answer. The ever increasing gap in income and wealth between the super-rich and the rest of us is destroying the American idea that life should get better with each generation. Income inequality is also upending our democracy as the super-rich have gained control of government and are using it to increase their wealth while crushing the hopes and dreams of the rest of us.
The Salem Chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America will examine runaway income inequality and its effects. Join us at Salem Public Library’s Loucks Auditorium on Thursday, September 27th, 2018 at 6:00 PM to learn more.
